A lot happened since two weeks ago: preparing...

La Vie est Belle

A lot happened since two weeks ago: preparing my documents, travel visa application, graduation, work, and so on. In summary:

Second chances.

The support of my family and friends.

A month-long leave in June.

My family flying over to see me graduate.

Graduation. :)

Having a bubble bath while watching Bridesmaid.

Tickets to Fall Out Boy’s concert.

New books and colored pens. <3

Ladurée’s vanilla macarons (although expensive)

No matter what happens, I am blessed.

I would like to...

Who’s a Big Blog Exchange Winner?

I would like to apologize if it took me a while to write about this. The last few weeks have been an absolute whirlwind of events and I had a hard time writing down my thoughts in a coherent manner. Everything was all jumbled up inside my head.

I am pleased to announce, in case you still didn’t know, I was chosen to be one of the lucky bloggers for the Big Blog Exchange!!!! *insert parade music* And can guess where I’ll be going? I’ll give you a clue: The Beatles, One Direction, Harry Potter and Sherlock Holmes. Or just see the photo above (Big Ben is a dead giveaway).

UNITED KINGDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wasn’t expecting this, ok. Prior to the live draw, I was pretty much set to any country but United Kingdom, particularly London, has always been on the top spot of my travel bucket list.

So, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who took the time to vote for me, and to even share my entry to your friends and family. <3! I am truly blessed to have a very supporting set of family, friends, loved ones, and most of all, wonderful Style Mermaid readers/followers. You guys are so awesome! *GROUP HUG*

Truth is, I almost slot my slot because of some misunderstanding from both parties. And I am incredibly thankful that God, the Universe and even to the Force for helping me out make this possible. Aside from your votes and support, I still couldn’t have done it without any omnipotent support, and I hope that you and the Higher Being will continue to support me until the very end.

Last but not the least, I would like to thank the Big Blog Exchange organizers and jury, specially to Scarlett Dixon and Brianda Lopez, for making this all possible. You guys have no idea how much this opportunity means to me and I am really, really thankful that you’ve reconsidered me. <3

THE EXCHANGED BLOGGED

I would also like to introduce the blogger who will be handling my blog during the exchange. I think it’s such an honored to exchange blogs with Sophie Roberts because I really admire her outlook in life. Her blog is called Challenge Sophie and that’s where she documents her adventures in taking on new challenges and achieving new goals.

BUT PLEASE PRAY FOR ME

I am one step closer to realize a lifelong dream but it’s too early to celebrate and be all-out excited about it since I still don’t have my UK VISA. My VISA is currently being processed and it will take 3 weeks for results to come out. Although everything will be sponsored, it doesn’t automatically mean that I will be approved. There is still that annoying but realistically speaking 1% to consider.

We’ve all done our part and now, it’s up to the British Embassy to decide whether or not I should go to UK. We’ve all put so much effort in this competition. So please, please, please pray that my application will be approved and may the odds be ever in my favour. Thank you.

Everyone, I’d like to introduce to...

Meet The Tastemakers

Everyone, I’d like to introduce to you this wonderful online shop called Taste Central, a retail partner of the famous deal sites, Deal Grocer. The people behind Taste Central describes themselves as a happy, people-pleasing bunch who are obsessed of one thing: Good taste. They’re tastemakers.

What I like about their aim is that they don’t just simply upload products and expect them to sell (Trust me, I know some online stores whose only aim is to make money… I find those really so annoying). The team behind Taste Central are very meticulous. They make sure everything, from the web experience to the details of the products that they are selling, will be presentable and beautiful.

Their website is very easy to use and, quite frankly, pleasing to the eyes. I had a lovely time browsing their website because all of products were all beautifully taken, clear and detailed. I had a hard time choosing which one I should buy first. Here are some of the items I loved:

As yoou can see, they’re all pretty but the item I loved the most was Heima’s Have Love, Will Travel wall art (first photo above) in teal.

There’s so much to rave about Taste Central, ok. But I think the best is the fact that most of the items in their catalog are 20-30% off! So, if you purchase the wall art directly from Heima Store, it will cost you PHP5,900 (USD144). But Taste Central is selling it for PHP 4,720 + PHP 100 delivery/shipping fee! I was able to save at least a PHP 1000, and we all know that a thousand bucks can go a long way. ;) Convenient and cheaper, without sacrificing good taste!

That sounds fantastic, how do I join? Joining Taste Central is easy peasy. All you need to do is visit Taste Central, click the Become A Member button on top and enter your details. You can also use Facebook and your DealGrocer account for a faster account set-up. It’s free, and if you invite your friends, you can even earn credits worth PHP 500!

By the way, Mother’s Day is coming. Do you have any idea on what to give to your mother? Check out their Mother’s Day Collection here.

Note: The item I purchased is semi-sponsored.

Kerastase Chronologiste
Kérastase Chronologiste was a product...

Kerastase Chronologiste

Kérastase Chronologiste was a product that was introduced years ago. It received so much praise from beauty editors and magazines, but was so-so received by consumers because it’s too expensive. The Chronologiste line was advertised as Kérastase’s finest restorative treatment that is perfect for all hair types, as if it was the hair’s holy grail. Like most hair products, the Chronologiste promises to leave the hair incredibly soft, supple and shiny. Not to mention, deeply nourished and strengthened. The special ingredients? The caviar pearls.

I love my hair so much and I’m pretty much willing to do anything for it, regardless of the cost. So, I purchased my Chronologiste set for only S$225, which already includes the Kérastase Nutritive Bain & Conditioner and free shipping. This was the cheapest deal I can find online. In Singapore, Action Salon sells one box for S$250, and offers a hair treatment at S$350. Yikes.

The box contains a cream, a spatula, a bowl, a pump filled with pearl-like mixture (the caviar) and an instruction kit. The instruction kit states that you have to mix the cream (at least 20 grams) and pearls in the bowl and apply it to your hair. Let the mixture stay there for 10 minutes, then rinse and style as usual. It’s pretty simple to do but I have no idea why I need to DIY the process.

Thoughts On This Product:

To answer my own question: The pearls does not simply dissolve, even when in contact with water. You have to make sure that the pearls are mashed well with the cream.

It’s more ideal to try the treatment first at a salon, and see if it can provide results. But if you’re being charged $350 for a one time treatment, might as well get the whole box because it’s cheaper.

Obviously, it’s expensive. I would only recommend people trying this product out if they’ve tried all possible means to save their dry and damaged hair.

They say you have to use foil. I don’t know. I think that’s what they do in the salon, but it wasn’t stated in the instruction kit.

Was it worth it? I don’t know, to be honest. I started using the product right after I dyed my hair back to brown, and had the hardest time seeing any results. The texture of my hair didn’t change, it was still dry and frizzy. My hair was soft but not shiny. :(

Conclusion: It doesn’t work with my hair.

Bellabox March 2013
03/05/2013 Update: I have so many things to...

Bellabox March 2013

03/05/2013 Update: I have so many things to blog about, including the recent Big Blog Exchange contest + live draw, but there a number of pressing matters that I need to fix first. I don’t think I’ll be able to relax or think straight until the end of next week. Figured I’ll just share some of the entries that’s I’ve been meaning to post but couldn’t find the right time to do so (I am so OC when it comes to post scheduling).

Last November, I made a Vanity Trove review, a subscription box here in Singapore. And because I’m not a beauty hoarder, it took me a couple of months to finally consume the samples they given me. Now that’s done, I figured I can try the other subscription boxes in the country.

Bellabox is worth $19.95 and it’s cheaper than Vanity Trove’s $25/month. You’ll receive 5 beauty samples, strictly 5 samples only. The box is small but pretty, which I love because it’s just right for my make-up.

Anyway, these are the products they sent out last March. I was more disappointed than amazed with the samples though. I’ve realized that I’m already happy with my beauty regimen. I don’t really need more gunk on my face (But I still want a bottle of Ujene’s serum).

Anyway, most of these products were the beauty goodies I’m going to give to my Instax Winner and newfound online friend (I usually end up being friends with my winners YAY), Aia.

1. Lemongrass House Shower Gel - This product, according to the leaflet attached to the box, is back by popular demand. It’s an all natural, eco-friendly massage oil that provides a luxurious out of body experience with gorgeous scenes that stimulates the senses. I’ve tried this product twice after shower and… it’s alright.

2. Wonderstruck Enchanted by Taylor Swift - This smells like wild berries and all that possible scent that you can associate with Taylor Swift. It smells nice but it’s not “me”. I’m not a big fan of fragrances and perfumes, I like my own scent. I’m pertaining to that scent that you can only associate to me alone.

3. Dr. CI: Labo Super Washing Foam Ex - What a weird name, lol. But this special cleanser, according to the leaflet again, is not like any other foam products you’ve used. The thick lather acts as cushion that protectsskin and an absorption agent that takes in dirt, oil, and dead skin, carrying it away as its rinsed off. Although it’s a Japanese Brand, I wasn’t really interested in trying it out. I swear by Celeteque.

4. Dr. CI: Labo Aqua-Collagen-Gel Super Moist Ex - I’m addicted to moisturizers. I applied it on a my hand, just used a small amount, and after 12 hours or so, I’ve noticed the applied portion is smoother and softer. I have no idea if this is non-comodogenic, so I might just continue using this for my hands. Hehe.

5. Mox Botanicals Lip Balm - According to Bellabox, this is a cult favorite among their members. The packaging does look nice and it’s really tempting to use, but I’ve been under plain ol’ petroleum jelly since high school.

Eat Play Love

This new and quirky cafe is hidden in the streets of Bugis area. It’s a new cafe but I’m certain that adults and kids alike will absolutely love this place.

I’ll let the photos do the talking. ;)

The look and feel of this cafe reminds me of Noriter but with added perks. At Eat Play Love, you get to do a lot of arts and craft projects. You can make accessories with the use of shrink paper, sew your own doll or just draw/color with a piece of paper! And even if that’s not your thing, you can just read one of their awesome crafty books for inspiration. :)

I can’t really give any verdict on the food yet because I only ordered waffles and ice cream (for S$5.5). It was yummy but I wasn’t a big fan with the syrup they used or the fact that they pour the syrup already. Although simple, the food presentation is still better than IHOP’s.

Sorry, I’ve been busy with work...

A Big Blog Exchange Update

Sorry, I’ve been busy with work lately that it took me a while to announce that I’m a finalist for the Big Blog Exchange!!! And there are no words that can fully describe how happy, thankful and nervous — all at the same time — I am right now.

Soooo…

Because the voting period was extended for another day, I was mortified. LOL. Ok, maybe not mortified. I was nervous and chaotic on the inside, but calm on the outside. This GIF describes me perfectly + cats:

The competition was supposed to end at 12NN GMT/8PM SGT. I was nowhere near a computer that time to fully campaign my entry. I just used my mobile phone, asked everybody who was willing to retweet my entry for their friends, family, followers to share. When the BBE Team closed the voting period, I was relieved and excited and aslkalskalsk. It was a whirlwind of emotions.

By 7:30PM, the BBE team made a blog post that the voting period has come to a close. After a few minutes, they posted their 100 finalist. I was 3rd for the Asia Pacific region! Woohoo!

But we made it! We’re “in”. The first leg of the competition is finally over. Now, it’s all for the judges/jury to decide if I will be part of the Big Blog Exchange.

Imagine 2, 5, 10 or 15 years from now, how do...

The World We Want

Imagine 2, 5, 10 or 15 years from now, how do you want or imagine the world to be? What are exactly the things you want the world to solve or achieve? Is it to end world hunger? Or send all kids to school? Ask yourself and find out what kind of world do you, and your descendants, want to live in?

The World We Want is a project of the United Nations and it aims to accomplish a set of goals within a certain period of time, which is 2015. What are these goals exactly? That is all up to YOU. I’m fully aware that there are a lot of issues that this world needs to solve and two years is too short to fix all that. This is why the United Nations decided to ask the Internet community for help.

The United Nations decided to put up a poll and are asking people like you and me to vote and nominate what we think are the six most pressing issues that the world is facing. Sounds easy enough, don’t you think?

Here are Top 6 Issues that were voted by everyone, including myself, on their poll:

A Good Education (YAY THIS IS MY TOP #1 AS WELL!!)

Better Healthcare

An honest and responsive government

Better Job Opportunities

Access to clean water and sanitation

Affordable and nutritious food.

United Nations is not asking much. All they want you to do is vote.
Vote here: http://www.myworld2015.org/index.html

And if possible, kindly reblog/repost this entry to invite your readers to vote as well. There’s no monetary compensation for this (Not a sponsored post) but with that small act of sharing this to your family, friends and readers can help us achieve the world we want.

Share your voice. It all starts with you. What kind of World do you Want?

The Little Dröm Store
I’ve heard about this quaint shop...

The Little Dröm Store

I’ve heard about this quaint shop located in Ann Siang Hill a long, long time ago. But I had a hard time going there because of school or work. Since I couldn’t spend Easter with my family, I’ve decided to go be a tourist for the day and visit some of the places I’ve been wanting to check out. :)

The Little Dröm Store is a gallery shop that houses one of a kind accessories, pretty books and notebooks, vintage things (in brand new state) and random knick knacks. The store is located two blocks away from Chinatown MRT, along the quaint street of Ann Siang Hill.

Ann Siang Hill, in general, is full of bars and restaurants. A hidden gem for people who likes to have a good time after a long day.

The store/coffee shop is hardly noticeable. The cafe is located at this street that looks like a dead-end and where a sign that says “no vehicles allowed”. If you still can’t find it, just remember to look for these signs.

Popular childhood treats! <3

Birds fly high, hard to catch. Friend like you, hard to forget.

Can I have everything? This looks like like a great workstation. :) I absolutely love that raincloud mobile, but I’m not sure if it’s for sale.

The only downside is that I find most of the items too expensive. Maybe I’m just being stingy. After all, the first rule of money is never use your own! :p But I’m glad I was able to check the place out and take photos.

“So you look at...

24 Things You’ll Learn While Living Abroad Alone

“So you look at your life, and the two countries that hold it, and realize that you are now two distinct people. As much as your countries represent and fulfill different parts of you and what you enjoy about life, as much as you have formed unbreakable bonds with people you love in both places, as much as you feel truly at home in either one, so you are divided in two. For the rest of your life, or at least it feels this way, you will spend your time in one naggingly longing for the other, and waiting until you can get back for at least a few weeks and dive back into the person you were back there.” — What Happens When You Live Abroad

Most of your life epiphanies will happen on the bus… or train.

You’ll learn how to be resourceful: from trivial things to the unconventional way of how to a cook pasta.

You’ll learn how to cook.

If you still don’t know how to cook, you won’t starve if you have a microwave and a refrigerator at home.

You’ll do your own laundry and you’ll soon realize the pros & cons of having too many clothes.

Don’t buy stuff, unless it’s necessary.

Save money. Keep a travel fund, an emergency fund, etc.

You’ll understand and respect the culture of others.

You will learn to appreciate the comforts of home.

There are times that you will feel sad and depressed. It’s ok. Cry and sleep it over. You’ll feel better the next day.

Facetime and Skype will bring you closer to home. But don’t do it too often.

Complaining won’t make you, or anyone else, better.

Ask, if you don’t know.

People are different but we are all the same in the end.

The way you see the world is going to be different.

You’ll learn how to say “no”.

Every once in a while, take the road less traveled.

Enjoy your own company.

You’ll learn a lot of things about yourself and the world.

Living abroad is not as glamorous like what other people think it is. It’s hard to make a new life in a foreign country but…

The only person you can depend the most is yourself. Have courage.

It’s alright if haven’t got it all figured out just yet. It’s OK to make mistakes.

Wake up with a smile. A lot of people wants to live abroad, and you’re one of the lucky ones.

To live abroad is a great life teacher and a humbling experience. You’ll experience life.

If you’ve been following me since...

Eat See Sleep Read: Singapore

If you’ve been following me since last year, you know that I’ve posted several entries about Singapore. You can read all of Singapore (mis)adventures and photo diaries here. :)

I believe that when you visit a new country, you must at least accomplish their “tourist to do” list. For example, it’s a must that you see the Forbidden City or Great Wall of China when in Beijing, or get a glimpse of Mt. Fuji and visit an onsen in Japan. Although I’m no expert, I believe that this is Singapore’s Eat, See, Sleep & Read.

Eat: Chicken Rice and Chili Crab are considered to be one of the popular dishes in Singapore. See LadyIronChef’s 10 Things To Eat in Singapore.

Where to eat? The nearest hawker centre in your area, of course! You should also check out the Kampong Glam area because it’s full of restaurants and bars.

See: There are so many things to see in Singapore, to be honest. I highly recommend stopping by the Marina Bay Area though, because that’s where most, if not all, the country’s landmarks and icons are located.

For shopping, I recommend ION Orchard (high-end), Bugis, *SCAPE and Far East Plaza. The best time to shop for clothes and rolling briefcase for women is between June-July because of the Great Singapore Sale!

You can also join the Duck Tours, a land & water tour of the city. If you have a 5-hour layover at Changi Airport, you can avail their FREE 2-hour tour of the city. :)

And don’t forget Universal Studios!

Sleep: If money is not an issue and you want to experience something new, then you might want to consider Wanderlust Hotel.

Moderate Budget: Orchard Parade Hotel or V Lavender Hotel.
Really Tight Budget (but not a hostel): Fragrance Hotel. Bring earplugs though.

I never had a chance to stay at a hostel, but you can read the following reviews by other blogers: Matchbox Concept Hostel and Footprints Hostel.

Read: Cat Socrates is a charming shop/cafe in Bras Basah Complex. This quaint store sells books, postcards, stationery, cameras, Polaroids, and many more. See Cristy’s blog post about Cat Socrates.

How many countries have you visited?
In your opinion, what should be the must Eat, See, Sleep & Read in _______/country?

by Kisty Mea & Maine Manalansan
I’ve...

Manila Adventures

by Kisty Mea & Maine Manalansan

I’ve been living in the Philippines most of my life (22 years and 51 weeks to be exact). I grew up in Manila but when someone asks me what to see in my city, my usual answer is “I don’t know”. Heck, I can even give you an itinerary if you planning to visit Singapore, but never Manila. I’m so engrossed in visiting another country, immersing myself in their rich culture and history, that I’ve completely forgotten to appreciate my own land…

Until now.

When in Manila, you should…

Start your day with a morning exercise at the CCP Complex. There are tons of morning activities available there for free. If exercise is not your thing, you can skip and indulge yourself in your hotel’s buffet.

The monument of the country’s National Hero

Afterwards, go straight to the Intramuros/Rizal Park area. Take a photo with the Kilometer Zero and the national hero’s monument, Jose Rizal, in the background.

Manila’s Walled City

To totally immerse yourself with Manila’s diverse history, sign up for the “Walk This Way” tour by Carlos Celdran. For rates and schedule, visit this website.

What I love about Manila’s tourist spots is their proximity to one another. From Intramuros/Rizal Park, ride a jeepney (a must for tourists, you won’t see that kind of transportation anywhere else!) that will take you to Binodo.

Binondo is most commonly known as Chinatown due to the ethnic Chinese people living in the area. Chinatown Manila is apparently established in 1594, making it the oldest in the world [source].

Visit the Binondo Church (you won’t miss it!) and pay homage to the Basilica’s patron saint, Lorenzo Ruiz. San Lorenzo Ruiz was the first Philippines’ saint and canonized in 1987. The Church was consecrated in the late 1500s to convert the Chinese to Christianity.

From here, you can either walk to the long stretch of Ongpin St. or ride a Kalesa (horse carriage) to roam around the area. You’ll see a lot of Kalesa parked outside the church.

Ongpin is this street with the red-green Friendship Arch between the Filipinos and Chinese. The street was originally called as Calle Sacristia and was renamed in 1915 after Roman Ongpin, the first Chinese-Filipino to wear the Barong Tagalog, an embroidered formal garment.

Since Ongpin street the heart of Manila’s Chinatown, it is full of restaurants, apothecaries, jeweleries and other imported goods from China.

Kalesa. Philippines’ version of a horse drawn carriage.

Possible routes from Binondo Church to Sta. Cruz Church. The blue arrow is what Google Maps recommend you to do. But I recommend taking the whole stretch of Ongpin instead. (view larger image)

At the end of Ongpin, you’ll stumble upon the area of Sta. Cruz. You know you’re in the area once you see this big old-looking fountain with a Church nearby and an old building with Plaza Fair signage on it. :p

You should take time and appreciate the architecture of this place. Aside from that, you can also do a little bit of shopping here. :)

From Sta. Cruz, you should make your way to Quiapo.

If you’re a photographer lover, it is a must that you walk along by Hidalgo Street. Hidalgo St. is a photographer’s haven. You can buy new and old, digital or film cameras and accessories here, and have broken cameras repaired. To get there, just ask the locals where SM (a department store) is. Just enter SM and exit on the other side. ;)

After shopping for your camera, just follow the path full of people selling vegetables and other stuff. That road will take you to Plaza Miranda and Quiapo Church.

Quiapo Church and a glimpse of Plaza Miranda

Quiapo Church is the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene and is one of the main churches in Manila. They hold a procession every New Year, Good Friday and January 9th. If you happen to visit on those dates, it is better not to go to Quiapo due to the congestion of the crowds.

Plaza Miranda is a public square in front of Quiapo Church. The area is full of fortune-tellers and vendors of lucky charms and amulets. Some vendors also sell flowers, fruit and vegetables. My friend and I had our fortunes told a few years ago and true enough, we did end up living in a foreign country. Indulge yourself with their fortunes and who knows? It might come true. :)

From here, you can either ride the LRT or Jeepney or cab that can take you back to the CCP Complex and visit SM Mall of Asia, the 3rd largest shopping mall in the continent. You can either shop to your heart’s content or have an early dinner by the bay side and watch the sunset.

Alternative Itinerary:

Double Exposure of Manila

Now, I believe visiting Binondo-Sta. Cruz-Quiapo is a great way to know more about the Filipino culture but if you have kids or you’ve been there before, you can opt for visiting our museums and other tourist attractions such as the National Museum, Museo Pambata (a museum for the kids and kid-at-heart!) and Manila Ocean Park. All of them are located near Rizal Park. :)

After a long day, you can choose to snooze the night off or go to Resorts World Manila to watch a movie, play at the casino or party in Republiq. :)

And that concludes my City of Manila itinerary and it’s good for a day or two trip in Manila. If you happen to say in the country for more than five days, don’t fret because there are 16 more cities and at least 2000 islands to explore. You’ll never run out of things to do in the Philippines. ;)

I hope you like this itinerary as much as I did making it. I might make a Part 2 but in the meantime, you can help me win a spot for the Big Blog Exchange contest. If chosen, I’ll be one of the few bloggers who gets to represent the Asia Pacific region! :) Just visit this page to vote. Thank you! <3

I had the wonderful...

Visiting Boracay: Tips and Itinerary

I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Boracay two weeks ago. My boyfriend’s friends, Greg and Jhanice, decided to tie the knot and appointed us to be their best man and maid of honor, respectively. :)

Boracay is a small island in the Philippines that has received numerous awards from travel publications and agencies. The place is a favorite among tourists for its white sands and crystal clear waters. :) I’m so happy that in my 24 years of existence, I finally got to visit this world-renowned beach. <3

How To Get There?

There are two ways to get to Boracay: by air and by sea.

By Air: Boracay is served by two airports in the Aklan province: one in Kalibo and the other in Caticlan (Godofredo P. Ramos Airport). Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines are some of the domestic airlines that fly to both airports.

By Sea: From Manila, it may take more or less 14 hours to reach the Caticlan Jetty Port. This option is cheaper and you get to visit different places along the way (Mindoro, Roxas, etc.).

Whatever mode of transportation you choose, your second-to-the-last destination is the Caticlan Jetty Port. Since Boracay is separated by a narrow strait, both tourists and locals can only get to the island through the boats operated at the jetty port.

Anyone arriving at the Boracay Airport in Caticlan will have to pay PHP50 for a tricycle (or do a 10-minute walk) which takes you to the Caticlan Jetty Port. At the port, you’ll be required to buy three different tickets: a boat ticket & boarding pass (PHP25), an environmental & admission fee ticket (PHP75) and terminal fee ticket (PHP100). The boat ride going to the Jetty Terminal takes about 15 minutes.

Once you’re on the other side, you’ll still need shell out another PHP100 for a tricycle that can take you to your hotel. Cash only basis.

What To Do?

There are so many things to do in Boracay. Common activities include Parasailing, Scuba Diving, Banana Boat, and Helmet Dive. Other non-water activities include hair braiding, henna tattoo and massage. While walking along the beach, you’ll stumble upon a lot of people offering you these activities and services. Remember to haggle!

At night, Boracay is vibrant with lights and music. You can listen to live bands, chill with your friends over an ice cold beer or dance until dawn. :)

We, on the other hand, weren’t fortunate enough to do any of the water activities. We did drink after the wedding, along with Khat and the newly weds. I also got myself a blowjob (the cocktail shot, ok!) /sad

What To Eat?

I think it’s safe to say that you’ll never get hungry in Boracay. There’s a wide variety of places to eat, fit to satisfy all of your cravings. We had dinner at Epic and their steak was fantastic. Lemon Cafe is quite popular but we never had a chance to try their food. D’Talipapa is the place to go to for fresh seafood. Shakey’s, Army Navy, Starbucks and McDonald’s are also available on the island.

When To Go?

Boracay is awfully crowded and expensive during Holy Week, April and December. If you’re on a budget, it’s better to visit during off-peak seasons (June to November).

The algae, that makes the sea greenish rather than crystal blue, is also seasonal. My friend said that they’re usually not that prominent during August and October.

Although our trip was very brief, I’d like to thank my boyfriend for handling everything: our flight, airport transfers, hotel bookings, and so on. What I love the most was the way he gave his anniversary gift. He knows I love surprises. We were swimming in the beach and while I was busy complaining at algae that were surrounding us, he took my hand and put this wonderful ring (not an engagement ring, ok!) on my finger. He is the sweetest. <3

Anyway, I hope this guide of mine gave you an idea what to expect or do when you visit Boracay. If you’ve been to Boracay before, hope you can share your own insights in the comment box.

As much as I wanted to, I wasn’t able to take a lot of photos while we were in Boracay. Since it was just the two of us, nobody else can watch for my camera while we swim, and I didn’t have that underwater case thing for my iPhone. AND LET’S NOT FORGET ABOUT THE HEAT!!! Whether it was 10AM or 4PM, I was squinting because of the intense heat. The light from the sun was too harsh to take nice photos.

Hopefully, there’ll be a next time and I can fully enjoy the beauty this island.

This trip, albeit short, is very special to me. This is our first local getaway as a couple, and we were able to spend our fourth anniversary together. <3

Plus, he gave me a pretty ring!!!!!!!!!!! /kilig

Pfft! It’s not an engagement ring though. He also gave me a Lumpy Space Princess backpack and necklace.

By the way, my Instax Giveaway ends this weekend.
Bucket lists are known to be a list of things people want to do or achieve in life before they die (In my list: Travel Europe and get a lifetime supply of Reid Supply tooling components for DIY projects). A reverse bucket list, on the other hand, is a list of the wonderful experiences you’ve made, achievements you’re proud of, places you’ve been and great things you’ve done.

What’s the purpose of a reverse bucket list, you ask? Two things: Remembering good and fun memories give us joy and when you feel low about yourself, this list will convince you that you are far greater than anyone else in this world.

Here’s my top 20, not necessarily in this order and may change in the future:

Make my parents proud and hear them say it.

To live in a foreign country for more than a year. Two years this October.

Get a college degree…

And earn a master’s degree at the age of 23.

Pass Calculus 1 and 2.

Win a contest, big or small.

Be a model for a day, c/o Sony VAIO Model Search.

Travel for work. :)

Ride on top of the elephant’s head (not on the saddle) while walking. This went on for 15 minutes until we finally reached the end of the trail. That was honestly scary.

Learn how to drive and have my own car.

Hold a sea turtle (smaller than my palm) and poke a jelly fish, lol.

Get a photograph published. Thank you Graphika Manila team for choosing my work.

Indoor climbing.

Participate in a 10K even if it’s composed of walking, jogging and a little bit of running. Traveling from CCP Complex to Coastal Road by foot is no joke.

Learn how to play chess, archery, soccer and ultimate frisbee.

Being applauded for my role as Sisa (Noli Me Tangere) and Medea (Jason and the Argonauts) in classroom plays. :p

Do a live performance of Michelle Branch’s All You Wanted, with a band and everything.

Riding the tallest Ferris wheel in the world: The Singapore Flyer.

To have the freedom and independence I’ve always wanted.

Pursuing a Happiness Project.

Do you have a reverse bucket list? If so, what’s your top 3?

There are two things that I like: cheap audio books and defined...

There are two things that I like: cheap audio books and defined hair curls without applying heat. The latter sounds impossible to do, since most hairstyles either require chemicals or heat. But this product I discovered a few months ago will help you achieve that Victoria Secret hairstyle without burning your crowning glory!

Everyone, meet the Curlformers / Hair Styling Roller Curler!;)

We first saw this item on Home Shopping Network (a TV shopping channel) for only PHP1200 or SGD37. The price was too much for a product that looks so simple. But one month later, we found the same item at a lesser price in Market! Market! and StreetDeals.sg.

In the Philippines, you can purchase this product for less than PHP500/SGD15. A reader even told me that they got this product for only PHP100/SGD3 in Divisoria. In Singapore, I purchased it from StreetDeals.sg for PHP550/SGD16.

The product is very easy to use. Just insert the wand inside the roller, use the hook to grab a section of your hair, then pull the wand to the other end of the roller. Adjust the curlers, if necessary. You can only achieve these curls if your hair is slightly damp, not wet.

This is what it’s supposed to look like:

Sorry if I can’t give you a full-blown result. My sister didn’t want to curl her hair that day and I have short hair.

This hair trick is 100% heatless but in order to achieve long lasting curls, you should keep the rollers for at least an hour and use a <span You can also use a hair dryer to quicken the result but that would be then be a semi-heatless curls. :p

Disclaimer: The curls on the cover photo is an old photo and used a hair curler to achieve such effect. But the Curlformers should also give you the same result. :)

As many of you know, I’m currently...

The Big Blog Exchange

As many of you know, I’m currently joining the Big Blog Exchange contest. What is this contest all about, you ask? Here’s a brief description:

The Big Blog Exchange is an exciting, unique, and exclusive project organized by Hostelling International, a global network of Youth Hostel Association. This wonderful project will send sixteen (16) passionate bloggers, swap lives, blogs, cultures and places simultaneously in real life for ten days.

It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity any bloggers wouldn’t want (and shouldn’t!) to miss. The moment I found about this contest, I didn’t hesitate. I clicked the ”Participate“ button and submitted my entry.

I love to travel and this might be my chance to be sent out to the other side of world, where cultures and beliefs are far more different from where I am right now. I‘ve always believe that traveling will change me in the most perplexed way but at the same time, it can help me understand the world even further. And the Big Blog Exchange can help me achieve that.

BUT WHY SHOULD YOU VOTE FOR ME AND MY BLOG? I’ll give you three reasons why:

01: Who here loves my travel photo diaries? Personally, they’re my favorite entries. If I’m lucky enough to be one of the 16 bloggers, then I get to take a lot of beautiful photos of the country I’m going to visit and I’ll be able to share them with you. :)

02: I like to share. I like to share the iPhone apps I use, the blogs I like, and even the sites I download all of my fonts. Blogging is all about sharing anyway. If chosen, then I get to share my experience with my readers in a fun and informative way! :)

03: I was told that I was kind and that I know the language of the universe. To be honest, that was the biggest compliment I’ve ever received… So, does that count for something? Yes? No? Either way, your vote will make me a happy girl. :)

ALSO: I LOVE BACON. WE BACON-LOVERS MUST STICK TOGETHER!!!

HOW TO VOTE? All you need to do is visit this page, click the VOTE button, then confirm via email. It won’t take 30 seconds of your time, I promise!

Hope you can vote and share/reblog/repost this entry to your friends, family and friends. :) It would mean the world to me if you can vote for me and let me be one of the lucky bloggers who will represent the Asia Pacific region! Thank you! <3

I’M TRYING TO VOTE BUT YOUR ENTRY IS UNDER REVIEW?

Sigh. This is not the first time I was reported. Someone out there is determined not to see me win this contest. To vote for me under these circumstances, just visit this page, search for The Style Mermaid on the list. Same procedure, just hit the VOTE button and confirm via email. :)

Personalized Graduation Announcement

Whoever said that high school is the best time of your life is wrong. College IS the best time of your life. For one thing, you don’t have some Mean Girl drama while you’re in college (unless you’re mentally stuck in high school, that’s a different story).

After a good 4-5 years, you’ll attend the graduation ceremony. A college graduation is a once in a lifetime moment (or in my case, twice!) that we will all forever cherish. Because all that hard work, parties that you can barely remember, academic failures, and goofball-slash-friendzone moments (Thanks boyfriend for climbing up a tree for me!) finally paid off.

A graduation ceremony is not just about a piece of paper, it’s an event where you receive a piece of paper, a tangible evidence, that you, your friends and your parents/family worked hard for.

I remember the time I found out that I passed my Calculus 2 exam. It was the last day of summer classes and submission for graduation application. While waiting for the Calculus results, I went out of campus to get my picture taken for the application. Paolo, another blockmate of mine who is also having a hard time with subject, waited in the ACB building. After 30 minutes or so, he texted me and told me we both passed. I couldn’t believe it! My initial reaction was: IS THIS FOR REAL? OMG I’M GOING TO GRADUATE OMG!!!!!!!!!!!

I immediately went to the 7th floor of the ACB Building to confirm the news. Almost everyone in the Calculus summer class of that year was there, including the lower batch, celebrating with us when the professor announced that Pao and I passed. It was, in so many levels, a great moment.

By the time I was about to go home, I called my mom to tell her that I failed Calculus. She made a loud “WHAAAT?!” over the phone. Of course, she would be furious if I failed Calculus. Then I giggled and told her that I passed. :P

Naturally, when my family found out, they were all equally ecstatic. My dad, was so proud, he would probably even print announcements for graduation. As I’ve said earlier, it was a great moment. Not just for me, but for everyone. <3

Congratulations to everyone who graduated/who will graduate this year. Always remember to inhabit your moments.

How do you make gifs like that in your mac lipsticks? Please do a tutorial ♥ You are really great with web design so we hope you can share things with us thank you so much, always love your blog :)

I can’t make a detailed tutorial right now, but you can read this tutorial instead. And thank you! :)

Hi Ate Kisty! I really want to be a great blogger like you but I don’t know where to start. Give me some help? :)

Install/Use a pretty blog design, write for yourself and visit other blogs. Start from there and be patient. :)

I’m thinking of making an ebook about this, like a really detailed one. If you have questions, feel free to send them now. :)

Ate Kisty! Why did you cut your hair/no more red hair? :( Will you dye it again in the future?

I got sick of my dry and damaged bleached ends. :) Will I dye it to a funky color in the future? Absolutely! I still want to go pink, blue/green and lilac. :)

Do you intend on going blonde anytime soon?

Someday, maybe.

I was wondering what basics I’d need to know when I’m gonna take Graphic Design for college? And what schools I should apply for (Philippines:)). Thanks!

Sorry for the super late response. CSB (Multimedia Arts), Ateneo (Information Design) and Raffles Manila are the only schools that I can think of that offers graphic design in the Philippines/Manila.

What do you need to know? Well… I don’t know. I didn’t study Graphic Design for college. :p I do know that graphic design will always require you to brainstorm for new ideas. I took short courses, read books about it and fortunately, I was surrounded with talented graphic designers.

The MAC Bombshell is a frost formula lipstick with soft pink shade and golden shimmer. What I love about this product is that it’s the closest shade I can find that can match my natural lip color. I think it’s a perfect choice if you want to retain the natural color of your lips but with some shimmer. If you’re looking for alternatives, try these NYX and Maybelline lipsticks.

Face of the Post

Old Face of the Post though. Chopped 2-3 inches of my hair a few weeks ago. Now, I have a legit Ashley Benson messy waves hairstyle + side fringe.

Anyway, here’s a swatch of all three MAC lippies I’ve bought:
