The Style Mermaid by Kisty Mea • The Silver Lining
If you’ve seen Silver Linings Playbook already, you might remember this significant quote that Bradley Cooper said to Robert De Niro: “You have to do everything you can and if you stay positive you have a shot at a silver lining.” The quote means that if you stay and remain positive, you can turn your life around. But it’s hard to stay positive when life is full of shit, isn’t it? [[MORE]]
When I moved here, I was really pessimistic about everything. I couldn’t fully adapt to my new-found friends who eat exotic foods (bat and dog meat, anyone?), to the new education system that sucks (really boring PowerPoint lectures) and the fact that everything was going really swell in Manila, then I left… In short, I hated my life. I told myself that everything is going to be alright but I was too miserable to believe my own advice (and who does that anyway?). It was only until the last term of school that I decided to be positive.
Being positive didn’t come to me as instantaneous, it was a process. It took me days, weeks and even months to really change my perspective. When I’m down, I’ll talk to Cariza and JP. Sometimes, I’ll read quotes and articles online to lift my spirits (which I usually tweet) and when I really can’t take it anymore, I’ll cry it all out and sleep it off. It was hard but the more I strive to change my outlook in life, things started to get better. One by one. :)

The Style Mermaid by Kisty Mea • Take Control (Part 2)
A few weeks ago, prior to joining the Collaborative Happiness Project, I remember making a pie chart of my daily routine. I just feel extremely tired by the time I reach home and end up wasting the 3-5 hours that I’m supposed to have for myself. Time is something I feel like I don’t have control of.
Making Myself Happier:
I said in my previous post that I want to make more time in doing the things I love. But how can I make more time? I’m already on the third chapter of The Happiness Journal when it hit me: [[MORE]]The first chapter was all about boosting energy. The first step is to act more energetically. If there’s anything I need to do and it can be done in less than a minute, then I should apply the one-minute rule and tackle a nagging task (if there’s any).
Another thing to add is that I can improve my productivity if I do things little by little. I have 3-5 hours for myself but I feel that isn’t enough to do the things I want. I still have to do my laundry, cook my food for next day’s lunch and so on. That said, 3-5 hours wasn’t enough but if I change my perception and apply the one-minute rule, then I’ll realize that doing all that will only consume 5-10 minutes of my “me” time.
Letting Go: The Unhappiness in Our Life
According to Kristina Karlsson, “Sometimes, we might blame someone or something for the unhappiness in our life, and often this can happen without even realizing it. It could be something big or something less.” I do this. You do this. Everyone does. For example, I sometimes blame the driver for making me late for school but in reality, I woke up late because I stayed up late.
You know what makes you happy and you’re the only one whom you can rely on making yourself happy (I am saying too much YOUs here). If being happy is a choice, then being unhappy is also a choice you can make. So the question is: How are you going to let go of blame and hold yourself accountable for your own happiness?
The answer to this question is quite easy but difficult to apply. Currently, I have three major sources of (consistent) unhappiness. I’ve labeled them as Unhappy A, Unhappy B, Unhappy C.
Last weekend, I made a decision to finally tackle one of them: Unhappy C. Unhappy C is the least of my problems and easiest to solve among the three. Despite that, I find it this problem very infuriating. With the help of my friends, I’ve made three things that I will do until I can finally let go: Do Not Indulge; Ignore, Ignore, Ignore; and when things go bad, Write In My Journal.
How are you going to learn to let go of the things you can’t control?
I’m a work in progress on this one. The only way is to simply let go. Sometimes, it’s better to sleep it over or talk about it. Whatever means I chose, I am certain that I’m still working on this one.
How will you change your week and plan ahead to make time for your happiness?
I’ve made a list of focus dreams to follow (which I’ll be sharing tomorrow, so stay tuned!). They’re simple and downright achievable. Baby steps but with big impact in the long run. :)
Ask Yourself:
How are you going to let go of blame and hold yourself accountable for your own happiness?
How are you going to learn to let go of the things you can’t control?
