The Style Mermaid by Kisty Mea • Type Tuesdays: Resources for Beginners
I’m deeply fascinated with Typography. It was my favorite lesson/activity during the graphic design course at Central Saints Martin. I think I like the challenge of playing with letters, making them visually appealing but still be able to send across a message.
I know I’m not the only one who’s interested in Typography here, so I thought I’ll share some great resources. Enjoy and make type! <3[[MORE]]
Interactive Typography by Aaron Bloom and Erin Kendig

This beautifully designed, interactive site is a great resource for anyone who are looking for an introduction to typography. It is also a helpful tool to familiarize yourself with typography jargons.
Fontruduction by Ian Obermuller

Another beautiful interactive site that aims to teach type anatomy and classification. This website also includes a quiz, asking you to identify the typeface.
Kern Type: A Kerning Game

Aside from the interesting plot and characters, a good book needs to be readable. It’s hard to read when the letters are closely spaced together or too far apart, so writers and publishers make sure that the space are distributed properly. In Typopgraphy, this activity is called Kerning.
I‘ve tried this game last August and got a 91/100 for the first try. Not bad, right?
Shape Type, the shaping letter game

You think Kern Type is too easy? Then this game will definitely give you a hard time. Not only does this game improve your pen tool skills, it will also improve your keen eye for details.
You should also check out their Color game!
Thinking With Type by Ellen Lupton

I think it is safe to say that this is one of the most recommended typography book in the industry and I’m asking myself why I still don’t have a copy. Ms. Lupton is generous enough to share her work on the Internet though.

The Style Mermaid by Kisty Mea • Quick Mask Tutorial
A tutorial request from an anonymous reader. :) For the record, I suck at explaining things so if you find this tutorial confusing, I highly recommend YouTube.
This tutorial aims to teach you how to combine two or three images. This trick can also help you remove unwanted background and/or blend overlapping photo together.

If you don’t have a remote control, you can use the camera’s self-timer feature. But it’s better to have a remote control because results are better if the camera is left untouched. Otherwise, the “lining” of the photos won’t look nice.
When you’re finally satisfied with your photos, time to edit them on your photo editor. I’m using Adobe Photoshop CS6.

When you paint the white box-like layer with black, the previous layer (or the layer under the current one) will appear. If you paint it with white, the previous layer disappears.
** Notice the pillow on the second and third photo. I removed the pillow from the second photo but made sure that the shadows are still there, so it looks realistic. My suggestion is play around until you’re happy with the outcome.
