Where To Go For A Safari Getaway: 5 Travel Ideas
There is something magical about seeing wild animals in their natural habitats. Lions and tigers and bears - oh my! When we were in Singapore, we tried to attend the night safari but disappointingly didn’t get to see anything. Of course, that is the nature of safaris, and you won’t be guaranteed to see the animals, but it is a thrill! Here are five of the best places to head to for a safari getaway.
Safaris were born in Kenya, and so it is the perfect place to experience one. The most popular destination for safaris is the Maasai Mara National Reserve which you may recognise from BBC’s Big Cat Diary. You can expect to get up close and terrifyingly personal with lions, leopards and cheetahs. You may even get to see the incredible spectacle that is the wildebeest migration between July and October. Head to northern Kenya to see elephants, flamingos and rhinos.
Tanzania has so many places to explore, including the amazing parks of Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti and Tarangire. Featuring some of the most impressive scenery in Africa, while travelling through the Serengeti you might be able to see herds of wildebeest and zebra, making it feel as though you are in a scene from the beginning of the Lion King!
Kruger National Park
Known as the premier national park in South Africa, tourism has led to this park being developed, which some people find a little jarring, however for a first time safari-goer, the tar roads, large camps and vast choice is a great way to dip your toe into the water. That isn’t to say that it isn’t worth it, the Big Five are prevalent in this area, as are wild dogs, cheetahs, birds and more. Even in the rainy season, thanks to the developed roads, there is plenty to see and do.
This is a fantastic family-friendly safari, where children can enjoy activities such as star gazing, games and crafts, in between going to spot the Big Five on game drives. Sure, children can learn about animals from a book, but this is an experience that will stick with them forever and teach them far more about the wild than any book. Plus the adults in the group are likely to enjoy the luxury accomodation too!
Found in South Africa, Tswalu is the area’s largest private wildlife reserve, consisting of just two luxury lodges. This is an opulent safari experience where you head out to find rhinos, lions, meerkats and antelopes with your own private guide in a personal vehicle. This certainly isn’t the cheapest way to enjoy a safari but it is one of the very best.
